why do they have wings?
-
All birds have wings. The difference is that penguins use their wings to swim, not fly.
Hope this helps~
P.S. They aren't really wings, they are flippers.

Do you breastfeed? If not, then why do you have nipples? ( assuming you're male). The wings are just a leftover relic from the evolution of the species. Something which may gradually disappear with further evolution, or develop into something else as the need arises. There are plenty of more such examples found in nature.
p.s. They can do a pretty good job, using them to swim.

No and yes. Penguins are flightless birds, and birds have wings. But they have adapted to use their wings for swimming. Their food source is the ocean, and they use the wings as flippers to "fly" in water rather than air. And they are excellent swimmers.
-
they have wings because they evolved from the same common ancestor as all birds but they have adapted for swimming not flying
so no... they don't fly

To help them swim. Their bodies aren't built for flying.
