Since you asked the question about just going surfing about waist deep.To be truthful, that is the depth of water that most shark attacks do happen.Ask the lifeguard on the beach if shark attacks have ever occurred.Theyre the ones who will be able to tell you all you need to know about the area you;ll be swimming in.Shark attacks are not common,......
Should I be worried about them, if I'm just going surfing about waist deep?

Yes, there are many types of sharks in the Atlantic ocean - this is their environment and where they live along with a gazillion other types of aquatic life. There are some things you need to know when in the ocean.

Don't ever swim alone, in the morning, at dusk or at night. The sharks come in close to the shore at these times to feed. Don't wear sparkly jewelry or bright colored bathing suits, as these are known to attract sharks, as does splashing and swimming erratically. Don't ever swim where there are lots of sea gulls flying around the water or where the fishermen are - this is where the sharks hang out (bait, small fish, food source, etc.) Don't swim when you have your period, sharks can smell even a very small amount of blood very far off. Never swim in the water with a dog - they tend to splash and make lots of noise and this is what attracts sharks - and of course, don't go too far out.

Ask the lifeguard on the beach if shark attacks have ever occurred. They're the ones who will be able to tell you all you need to know about the area you;'ll be swimming in.

Shark attacks are not common, but it's better to know some simple guidelines before you go in the water.

yes there are. depends where you are surfing. avoid beaches etc where sharks are known to congregate. eg they eat seals so avoid looking like a seal. most shark attacks are a mistake for a seal.the depth of water is irrelevant over 2 feet.
make sure you have no cuts. avoid swimming where females are whom are having 'periods'
odds are nothing will occur. shark bites are still uncommon.

There are sharks everywhere, but there isn't a reason to worry about them. You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning.

*facepalm*

-
Yes. But not sure which ones and if they come close to shores

ugh, yeah there are sharks. should you worry? no doubt you could get bit but the chances are slim.
