Do bugs think or do they just do what they need to do to survive

The insect brain is very rudimentary. The primary function is chemical signalling, controlling movement etc. To be able to think an animal needs more brain cells and these usually form what we call the cerebral or neocortex. Animals with large amounts of neocortex include humans and other primates, dolphins and their relatives, and some breeds of dog. Most mammals just have the bare minimum, and other species like sharks don't have any neocortex but use the more rudimentary parts of the brain for thinking. However insects don't really fit in this category because they just don't have enough brain cells.

Insects will still experience pain, fear, and respond to threats.

Insects, like all lower form animals respond and act through instinct alone. The only real thinking, if you want to call it that, is when to act or respond to a certain stimuli. For instance, when is the exact moment a Praying Mantis should strike at his prey, or exactly when should a fly take off as he is about to be swatted.

Insects cannot reason or solve problems like rats do in a maze, etc.

Due to the fact that insects lack a brain, it can be assumed that they do not think. However, they will still respond to certain stimuli, and some bugs can be "trained" to fly towards certain scents. For instance, just like a dog connects sitting with a treat, wasps have been trained that by following the scent of drugs, they get food
