I am in Arkansas and the heat is intense! It was 109 degrees today at my house. The heat wave is so strong due to a strong ridge of high pressure which is controlling the weather. The moist winds from the gulf are not penetrating the high pressure system and the jet stream aloft is too far north, keeping the cooler pacific air bottled up in Canada. Humidity levels are extremely low, due to the soil moisture content and lack of gulf moisture. The heat will only become more intense as the ground continues to dry out. The fire danger is very high because of this. I hope the high pressure system will move on out soon! This dry heat is causing thousands of wildfires each day!
PS: Simply put, the High Pressure system is acting like a huge bubble that is not allowing any moisture inside. The heat builds because moisture is not limiting it!

Ive been wondering this myself. 105 degrees today. Be careful; this is expected to continue through saturday and sunday. Heat index at 109.
I dont have an answer for you sadly. and of course, immediately east of the ohio valley, a gigantic destructive storm is occuring.
Everyone affected should make sure they know the signs of heat illness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_stroke cause this is gonna be a long one :/
Edit: Oh, right. I remember now. Whats happening is an anticyclone.
