Light is incident normally on the short face of a 30 degrees-60 degrees-90 degrees prism (see the figure ). A drop of liquid is placed on the hypotenuse of the prism.

If the index of the prism is 1.67, find the maximum index that the liquid may have if the light is to be totally reflected.

10 points for correct answer.

-
The light strikes the hypotenuse at an internal angle of incidence = 60º .. this is to be the critical angle with the ray continuing along the hypotenuse in the liquid (refractive index = N)

Applying n.sin i = constant at this boundary..

1.67 sin 60 = N.sin 90 .. (sin 90 = 1)

N = 1.67 sin 60 .. .. .. ►N = 1.45
