How on earth do people memorize physics and maths formulas

It seems impossible.

By using them a lot when solving problems.

But memorising them all is not usually necessary. You can always refer to them written somewhere. Even in an exam situation it's not always necessary to memorise them - you're often either given any necessary formulae in a question, have a list of relevant formulae at the end of the exam paper, or permitted to bring in a "cheat-sheet" or two with formulae written on them.

Most of them are okay - some of them are unbearable though.

In my day, we had to learn all the Physics and Maths formula by heart as nothing was given in the exam; as a result most of the common ones I can remember now anyway. Having said that, Physics and Maths is not really about remembering lots of formula but more about understanding your subject. Thankfully, today, common sense prevails and all formula are given to you on a sheet in the exam. The most important thing is knowing what's available, how to use them and where to find them when needed.

It's way easier to do if you understand what the formula MEANS, instead of treating it as simply a way to manipulate numbers. That also makes it easier to understand which formula to use in a particular case.

If you are better at understanding you figure out how they work and remember them like that, if you are better at remembering you do that. Many courses give you a formula sheet.
An example of what are you struggling with would be good.
