There is no such thing as hypnotizing someone. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. The person first has to be willing to be hypnotized. While hypnotized, a suggestion is implanted in the subconscious mind. The effectiveness of this suggestion depends entirely on the suggestibility of the person.
A person who is resistant to suggestion will have trouble entering the hypnotic state and implanted suggestions will be minimally effective, if they work at all.
Highly suggestible people have no trouble entering the hypnotic state and implanted suggestions are usually very effective.
Most people are somewhere in the middle. If it worked and how long it would last depends entirely on the person's suggestibility, so if the person is highly suggestible, and they were willing to forget, then yes they would forget it, more or less permanently. Someone who is resistant to hypnosis would not forget it at all.
According to current theory, our brain never actually forgets anything. Memory isn't an issue (unless there is a physical or chemical issue). The problem is recall. What you would actually be doing is implanting a suggestion to prevent the person from recalling the memory.
