I have to present the abstract of this article

to my health class next week. I have a general idea of what it means but I'm not sure enough to be able to talk about it. Can someone just help me translate the medical jargon (hyperinsulinemia, pancreatic islet hypertrophy? "catabolic effects on protein metabolism"?). I just need a little help...=/

hyper = too much
hypo = too little
hyperinsulinemia = too much insuline in the blood
hypertrophy = too much of a certain type of cell, or an organ that is too large
pancreas = an organ near the stomach, makes several hormones for digestion
pancreatic islets = "islets of Langerhans", regions in the pancreas where insuline (and other hormones) are made
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islets_of_L…
pancreatic islet hypertrophy = enlargement of the pancreatic islet regions, so more islet cells, so more insulin production
metabolism = summary name for lot of processes in body cells (contain both catabolism as well as anabolism)
catabolism = the pathways of your body that break down food and give you energy
anabolism = the pathways that build complex materials (will cost energy)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metabolism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catabolism
catabolic effects on protein metabolism = effects that will cause an increased breakdown of protein.
I hope this helps! A lot of it is "jargon" used by doctors and scientists, but after a while you will start to get used to it.
If you need more words, you can also just type them in in Google or Wikipedia. That is what I usually do!
