Math help, I don't get this question

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-05-22] [Hit: ]
?-6.99 times tax. multiply by 3.1.45 times tax.......
Menu list:

Popcorn: $6.99
Hot dog: $1.45
Can of pop/water: $0.99
Ice Cream: $2.05

The question: If the Arnold family purchases 3 popcorns, 5 drinks, 6 hot dogs, and 2 ice creams, how much money would it cost them, including tax (5%)?

So basically, I know I have to multiply the cost by how much i want of the food, but do I add tax to that particular food item for them all then add it together, or do i multiply the coSt by how much i want of the food for all of them THEN add 5% tax?

My example: 3 popcorn costs $20.97 without tax.
^^^ Do I add tax and do the same for it all then add it together or do I do the other stuff without tax, THEN add the tax to the total sum of ALL the food items? Help! Please show your work??

6.99 times tax. multiply by 3. (Tax=5%)
1.45 times tax. multiply by 6.
.99 times tax. multiply by 5.
2.05 times tax. multiply by 2.
THEN YOU GET YOUR ANSWER!

Except for possible rounding differences, the tax on the items figured separately and the tax on the total order should be the same. In practice, if all of the items are purchased at the same time, the costs for each item are totaled into a final cost before the tax is applied to that total cost.

(3 * 6.99) + (5 * 0.99) + (6 * 1.45) + (2 * 2.05) = cost before tax

total cost = 1.05 * cost before tax

Add up the cost of everything before figuring out how much the tax is. It will be less work and will avoid roundoff errors.
