Hello!

My homework says to graph the line and find 2 more points and it gives (3,-1); m = 1/2.

How would I do that?

-
y - y1 = m(x - x1) [point slope form]

y - (-1) = (1/2)(x - 3)
y + 1 = (1/2)x - 3/2
y = (1/2)x - 5/2 [slope intercept]

2y = x - 5
-x + 2y = 5
x - 2y = 5 [standard form]

when y = 0
x = 5
(5, 0)

when x = 0
-2y = 5
y = -5/2
(0, -5/2)

Place a point at (3,-1) on the graph. The slope is 1/2 and remember that slope is Rise / Run. Therefore you go up 1 and to the right two (since both numbers are positive). From that point, again go up one and to the right two for a second point. If you have done this correctly, you should be able to use a ruler to draw a straight line through all three points.

Since m is your slope (rise/run), you need to just start at the point (3,-1) and rise 1 and run right two. Do that again to the next point. If your want to go down, your make the rise/run negative by going down one and moving left two.
