Assuming you're talking about the formula An = A1 + (n - 1) d
An = the nth term
A1 = the first term
n = the number of the term of a sequence
d = common difference

for example: You need to find the equation for the sequence 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
An = the nth term
A1 = 3
n = nth term (at the moment, you don't have a # term you are trying to find, you just want the equation)
d = 3 (since 3 + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7 + 2 = 9...)

An = A1 + (n - 1) d
An = 3 + (n - 1) 2 Distribute the 2 (d)
An = 3 + (2n - 2) Rearrange
An = 2n - 2 + 3 Add
An = 2n + 1

Now find the 10th term. (plug 10 into the n's spot in the equation you just found)
An = A10 = 10th term
n = 10

A10 = 2(10) + 1 Distribute the 2
A10 = 20 + 1 Add
A10 = 21

If you checked you're work, you would have to count to the 10th term.

A sequence is a series of numbers.
A simple one is the fibonacci series which is 1,1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13,.....
I create this by saying An = A(n-1) + A(n -2), and then I must define A1 = 1 and A2 = 1
A3 = A1 + A2 , 1 + 1 = 2. A4 = A2 + A3 1 + 2 = 3. A5 = A3 + A4 2 + 3 = 5 and so on

The N represents the Nth term of the sequence. In the fibonacci series A5 = 5, A6 = 8
