Set Language and Notation!

but you do need to to the intersection first.Sorry, the Union symbol should be intersection.I hope this helps-If you mean Z subset of X ∩ Ythen you draw two intersecting circles and inside the the intersection region you draw a small circle for Z.......
I was asked to draw a Venn Diagram of the situation Z ⊂ X ∩ Y.

My answer was completely different from the correct one, because I interpreted the question to be Z is a proper subset of X, and X intersects Y. Apparently, I'm supposed to draw X intersects Y first, then following to include the set Z within the intersection.

Confused!

The issue is similar to order of operations from algebra. When you see 1 + 2 * 4 you probably know by now that you have to multiply first, making 1 + 8 = 9. It's the same idea here, you'll eventually get used to the order of the set notation symbols :)

∩ denotes an operation: in this case, intersect the two things around the symbol.

⊂ denotes a relationship: in this case, the stuff on the left is "inside" the stuff on the right.

Sort of like writing 8 < 2 + 7, you don't say that "ok first 8 is less than 2. Now add 7 to something."

It might be confusing at first but hang in there! You eventually get used to it and not even think about it anymore :)

Here you go. I initially did the same thing you did, but you do need to to the intersection first.

Sorry, the Union symbol should be intersection.

I hope this helps
