Well you are correct up to, x + ( x + 1 )² = 5; but then you are not correct.

Expanding the above, and simplifying, x² + 3x - 4 = 0

==> x² + 4x - x - 4 = 0

==> x(x + 4) - 1(x + 4) = 0

==> (x + 4)(x - 1) = 0; so either x = -4 or 1

So, y = 9 or 4

Thus the two points of intersection are: (-4, 9) (1, 4)
