i believe it is done by adding a set of numbers that are raised to differnt powers.
for example: express 333 as a sum of powers of 3?
3 raised to the 5th or 3^5 = 243
3 raised to the 4th or 3^4 = 81
3 raised to the 2nd of 3^2 = 9
if you add the products of these number you get 333. (243 + 81 + 9 = 333)
so expressing 333 as a sum of powers of 3 can be done by the following equation:
3^5 + 3^4 + 3^2 = 333
