This is a simple math homework that I simply cant understand why I got the wrong answer. It's a different answer from the back of my math book.
(-2)(-10)+(-4)2 (NOTE: the 2 is an exponent)
I got a 4 for an answer because there is nothing you can do with the -2 and -10 so the answer for that is -12. Then I multiplied -4 x -4 (because there is a 2 as an exponent) which gives me 16. Then I subtracted -12+16=4. Thats the wrong answer.
The right answer is 36. Please tell me how I can get that answer.

-2 * -10 + (-4)^2
20 + 16 = 36
20 + 16 = 36
