As for your second question, which I don't fully understand, the number has to be four (even though you wrote "answer: 3" which I don't understand why you put this up if you knew the answer, even though it's wrong). 8 minus 4 is 4, 4 times 3 is 12, which is 3 times 4, the original number. This is a dumb question, as any number tripled is three times that number, just as 2 plus one minus one is still 2. The tripled and divided by three cancel out. Also, the dolphin reference seems... well, irrelevant.

let's simplify the data: the number of breaths an elephat takes =x

since "a 1-oz mouse takes about 16 times as many breaths as does a 3-ton elephant"
mouse=16x

add them: x+16x=170
simplify:17x=170
x=10

so the elephant takes 10 breaths and the mouse takes 160

2)
(8-x)*3=3x
8-x=x
8=2x
4=x

The answer should be 4...are you sure you wrote the problem right?
