y= x²- 5x- 14

y = x²- 5x- 14
y = x² - 7x + 2x - 14
y = x(x - 7) + 2(x - 7)
y = (x - 7) (x + 2)

take a factor pair of 14 such that you can combine them by adding or subtracting to give -5 and multiplied together gives -14.
factor pairs of 14 are (1,14) (2,7) there are no other factor pairs for 14.
taking 2 & -7 I can get -5 by adding and -14 by multiplying so these are the numbers I need.
y= (x+2)(x-7) solve the equation by making y=0 so either x+2=0 or x-7=0
hence x=-2 or x=7
