with the alternative hypothesis (denoted by H1) being the opposite.So, the null hypothesis for 1. a) is:μ = 25.The alternative is μ ≠ 25.1.......
1. State the null and alternative hypothesis for the claim:

a) The average age of students is 25.

b) More than 65% of voters favor stronger gun control legislation.

Hi there, firstly I'll explain the concepts - the 'null' hypothesis (denoted by H0) is often the result you are testing for, with the 'alternative' hypothesis (denoted by H1) being the opposite.

So, the null hypothesis for 1. a) is: μ = 25. The alternative is μ ≠ 25. When you write this out it looks like so:

1. a)
H0 : μ = 25
H1 : μ ≠ 25

Follow the same rule for part b) however we are now working with percentages, so pi is used.

1. b)
H0 : π ≤ .65 (percentages always written as decimals)
H1 : π > .65

Hope this helps you! :)

a) Ho: = 25
Ha: = 25 with a line through it

b) Ho: =.65
Ha: = .65 with a line through it

-
a.
Ho: mu is not equal to 25
Ha: mu is equal to 25

you are testing to either accept or reject the null hypothesis, rejecting means the statement is true

-
1. Ho: mu = 25
Ha: mu not equal 25

2. Ho: pi = .65
Ha: pi > .65
