Logarithm function help

Could someone explain to me what a logarithm is? What I'm reading in my material, is when the function grows etc. which is no help at all.

Let's say we have something like this:
y=log(subscript)2 x, how should I plot the graph for it? What are the steps? What do I have to calculate etc. step by step.

Also, how do I use logarithm on my calculator?

let log be log to base 2
y = log x

x__2__4__8__16__32__64
y__1__2__3___4__ 5___6

Can now plot these points to obtain a graph.
