az_lender say: The number of persons (in the US) obtaining degrees in Aerospace Engineering is much larger than the number of likely job openings in that field. Get the BSME, and take some of the aerospace classes as electives if you can.

Joseph say: The two degrees are nearly identical, the difference is a handful of classes. You have to take classes like Aerodynamics or Flight Vehicle Design for the Aerospace degree instead of HVAC, or ME Design Elective for Mechanical, for example. Depending on the school it maybe possible to take the both the required Mechanical Engineering classes and the Aerospace Engineering classes as ME electives. You graduate with the Mechanical Engineering degree, witch has a lot wider scope and more job opportunities, but you will have enough background in Aerospace to get a job in that field.
This is what happened to me. I studied Aerospace Engineering, but took enough Mechanical Engineering classes to get a BSME. Turned out to be one of the smartest things I ever did. I graduated in 1988, just as the Cold War ended. There were massive layoffs in Aerospace industry from which it hasn't recovered to this day. The Help Wanted ads at the time were listing 6 months to 3 years of experience as requirements for entry level jobs.
I got a job as a Mechanical Engineer in heavy construction. I didn't think I would like it and that I could get back into aerospace when things get better. Thirty years later I am still playing with pipes, pumps and other mechanical systems in the water treatment plants and having fun.

Philomel say: You can learn a lot about which field is best for you by taking a Vocational Aptitude Test at your local library for free. It will point you to the field you are best suited for and will enjoy the most for your career.

oil field trash say: A mechanical degree is the most versatile. You can still work in aero space if you want to and can find a opening.
