Why do they not have elevators that move horizontally?
I am a big fan of elevators that move vertically, thanx v much to whomever invented that. But I figure at least 95 per cent of the distance I cover in any trip occurs horizontally. What am I supposed to do, just keep walking? This is the 21st century not the middle ages Jack. When are they going to install the...

Adam D say: What do you think cars, buses, trains, etc., are? Boxes that move people horizontally.
Never been to an airport? There are underground shuttles between terminals, those are essentially horizontal elevators. And there are moving sidewalks, you keep walking but move at almost double speed.

Bob say: Go to Palma airport.
-
John say: They are called people movers.
-
vote_libertarian_in_2008 say: They do, they re called moving sidewalks.
-
Robin say: they do at airports
-
say: it was a guy named Otis .

A.J. say: They do it at automated warehouses. We have trains, bus, cars, trams, moving sidewalks all for people in higher volume. For buildings, it is not cost or space effective and vertical is the big effort compared with walking. There are also electric carts and wheelchairs as needed.

thomas f say: I'm sorry to hear that you are one of those 400+ lb. people. I think they have special carts and wheelchairs for moving long distances horizontally. I know my grocery store has a few of these, as well as Walmart and the like. Or you might consider losing some weight.
Good luck.

ANDRE L say: Yes, just keep walking, exercise is good for you.
Leaving aside that all of the mechanisms involved in modern elevators cannot be turned 90 degrees to move horizontally, no building owner wants to LOSE all the space that horizontal elevtaor shafts would mean.
Plus, while lots of buildings are, say, 500 feet tall, pretty much none are 500 feet WISE, so there would no point, well, other than for utterly lazy fat slobs.

Nancy say: elevate = up...rethink this q

Carlos say: Since everyone here pretty much put what answers I wanted to put too add you know there are bulidings called groundscrapers that instead of being higher skyscrapers as the pentagon is a groundscraper and huge mall bulidings

Brian say: Other than the moving side walks and golf cart type electric vehicles, i would think that if buildings were much much wider an effiencent sideways moving device would be a must. I am becoming less suprised and more saddened by how rude people can be, as seen in some of these answers. I think your question was pretty good. Someone did bring up Star Trek; I have also seen them in 1 or 2 other sci-fi shows. Other than "a need" because of wider buildings, i would think that it would need to be socially acceptable, relatively cheap, conveneient, safe and all those other things that go into engineering design. I would also guess that this would be a steep learning curving for building architecture, so it would be a tough sell...uless/until it became really popular
-
Carl say: Car, Bus, Bicycle, Tricycle, Scooter, Motorcycle, Airplane, Submarine.
Any of those ring a bell?
-
roger say: Not like the Turbo lifts in Star Trek?
But Star Trek had gravity dampers...
To accelerate sideways would put a sideways force on the passengers. They would likely fall over.
-
josh say: I think its because stairs can tire people out faster
-
John R say: They do... I just took one from Concourse C to Concourse E at Atlanta airport. Its called a train.
-
StarShine say: There are plenty of places that have moving sidewalks. I've seen them in a number of airports. However, since I'm capable of walking, I choose to avoid them.
