he graduated from MIT with a 3.5 gpa, and was looking to start up a career in dallas area. is there any certifications he could take to give him more of a edge when looking for jobs.

Experience would be the best advantage he would have over other candidates. However, there are other certifications some companies would look for but it would be dependent on what the job entails. I am a Mechanical Engineer and I remember coming across a few positions looking for a Solidworks certification (a CAD 3D software) and/or a Six Sigma certification. But, like I said, experience will out weigh either of those certifications. If he graduated without any internships or co-ops, he won't be able to get any more experience at this point so possibly looking into one of those certifications would help (I would say the Six Sigma certification is more important).
Although, I wouldn't worry about gaining any certifications until he looked into a few positions in Texas he would like to obtain. Do some research before taking any unnecessary actions. In addition, he graduated from one of the most prestigious engineering schools in the nation with a 3.5 GPA so I would very much doubt he will have much trouble getting any job as it is. He's obviously an intelligent, hard-working kid and companies will see that.
Good luck to your friend
