How do you know how far you are from the epicenter of an earthquake

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-05-03] [Hit: ]
With reports from other stations for the same earthquake and the distance from those stations, the earthquake can be located.......
Working on indentifying epicenters. Im not sure how to answer this question. Help is much appreciated :)

Well, granted you can feel the shakes (or observe a seismograph trace), there are two main types of earthquake waves, and their first arrivals can be identified on the trace. They travel at different speeds, so the time separation between the two tells you how far away you are. With reports from other stations for the same earthquake and the distance from those stations, the earthquake can be located.
