I'm watching Jericho the show, and it's a about a nuclear explosion and everyone hides underground from the rain. Because of the radiation in the rain. Anyways this guy was in the rain and he walks in and everyone freaks out. So the nurse tells the guy to drink iodine and if he pukes soon he will die. I was like won't he throw up from the iodine? *Mind Blown* so on reality what would happen?

In that case its to protect your thyroid by giving your body an excess of iodine so absorption of radioactive iodine-131 in fallout is potentially reduced.
I have traveled in placed where the water is badly contaminated that chlorination and / or boiling is not sufficient so we had to add iodine to the boiled water. It is disgusting to drink but safe in small doses

Iodine tablets are provided for free to anyone living in the proximity of a nuclear power station. Now, about drinking straight iodine... I don't know about that, I would just leave it for the movies.
