If we hadn't developed space technology or space food what would we not have today here on earth?
-
I don't know that space food has been a major gain for life on earth. But NASA and aerospace research has generated a great deal.
Without NASA's research go ahead and get rid of your cell phone. Gone is your GPS. Dozens of materials that are integral to our modern world would have never been developed. Without those materials you're looking at far higher prices for energy and goods. Google "NASA spinoffs" and you might be able to get a picture of how immensely the world has beenfited from NASA's innovations.
Even something like the Hubble telescope has immensely benefited humanity. When it was first launched the Hubble had a problem with its mirror giving it blurred pictures. In an effort to repair the blurred images NASA scientists developed imaging techniques and algorithms. Those techniques and algorithms are now used in medical imaging equipment to detect cancer.
Now beyond those spinoffs we got something else. Inspiration. The generation that witnessed the Apollo program entered Universities and pursued degrees in science, math and engineering on unprecedented levels. That generation is the one that birthed the personal computer, that beat the USSR because we could out innovate them, that has given us our modern world.
