Agree or Disagree: NASA has all the technology (or will have it with a few years of research & development) to

There is no engineering on financial reason that it could not be done. That was the original plan. When Neil Armstrong was back on Earth getting a parade and all that the boys at NASA were saying Right, man on Mars by 1981. We can do it. But then Nixon gutted the funding,......

Another issue is just space for provisions. With current technology, it would take years to get to Mars, and that is an absolute TON of oxygen, food and water required to keep the astronauts alive. Just 2 astronauts would require a massive amount of provisions just to keep them alive. And, just like the above paragraph, that is more fuel needed for take-off, less space available for more provisions and equipment for the ride back, etc. We are already talking about a spacecraft larger than any we have ever seen.

There are theories about how to reduce these things. There are several projects that could have reduced the travel time, mostly having to do with nuclear propulsion, but most of these projects (like Project Orion) have been scrapped. There are a couple still going now, but with NASA's budget hurting, it seems unlikely any viable options will come out of it for a while.

They could have done it 30 years ago. There is no engineering on financial reason that it could not be done. That was the original plan. When Neil Armstrong was back on Earth getting a parade and all that the boys at NASA were saying "Right, man on Mars by 1981. We can do it". But then Nixon gutted the funding, cancelled all the programs and NASA has pretty much been rudderless ever since.

Agree
If congress would of been more careful with how they spent our income tax money.
It would of happened years ago instead of financing this scientific venture Congress is trying to pay off the national deficit (that came from their neglectful use of our income tax money) of 1.5 trillion dollars

-
They have the technology, but what they don't have is all the necessary facilities to carry out a mission. The technology isn't much of a problem. The major thing is the financial situation as you have stated.

-
If you can convince the entire planet to dedicate itself to space exploration and drop everything else we do there could be hotels on mars right now. Otherwise there isn't any incentive. It's not always all about money.

-
Definitely has the technology right now. Money is the problem.

-
I definitely agree. It is lack of funding and not lack of technology which is stopping NASA from sending people to Mars.

-
i think finance is the only thing preventing any realistic progress amongst the will of the human potential.

-
Agree!

-
the technology exists now, it is just a matter of national willpower to do it

-
Yeah definitely.

-
Our technology can do that,
but these is not enough money to pay for the trip and back.
