get into an aircraft, put a loads of fuel in it, and fly high and high , and hopefully the whole explosion will be over in 48 hours, ha ha.-well hopefully I would have one of those underground storm cellars or some kind of emergency facility down there maybe that would help but its hard to say right now.......
I have huge faith in him to save the world from destruction by comet impact. So far he has an unblemished track record of destroying them. All hail Jarvis.

Well if an object that can destroy life on Earth is actually a comet, I would probably hurry to write a paper on it, because, up to that day, no one would ever have thought that a comet could be large enough to destroy life of Earth.
It would be a rare find indeed.
Also, I would wonder why something big enough to kill us was not detected until one hour before the hit. Something large enough to destroy us would normally be detected decades (tens of years) before coming close.
I would run into the street and panic, not being able to find a publisher within the hour.
That is the scientific side of the answer.
For the psychological side of your question, I would use the remaining minutes of that hour to ask that question in a different section.

In a way, Pluto is a comet (it is mostly ice, it has a completely frozen atmosphere that would vaporize if it came closer to the Sun). If Pluto was on a collision course with Earth, it would probably destroy most of us... if it survives its trip into the "warm" region of the inner solar system.
So, in a way, I guess it is possible for a "comet" to be big enough. However, Pluto is visible from a distance of over 30 AU (one AU is the distance from the Sun to Earth), so that it would be visible centuries before hitting us... if it were coming our way (which it isn't).
So the scenario is only possible in poorly researched movies.
