One way to catch them is to look under rocks and boards and other surface objects in the early morning, shortly before sun rise, when they are still cold and inactive. If you turn over rocks, logs and boards now or in early spring, you may find some too. You can get a field guide that covers your area to see which lizards are found in your area. You may also have to find out whether your state requires licenses or permits to catch and keep them.

Of course when you are looking for lizards, you may also find some snakes, including venomous ones like rattlers. So, be careful when turning over logs and rocks and other surface objects. If you really just want a pet lizard, a better, safer way to get one is to buy one from a pet shop.
