This is kinda funny.
In trying to explain the concept of energy to a kid, we try to indicate that energy is a number that indicates how much work can be done on a "thing." So what if we think of a closed economy where no money can be produced nor lost as a model for this?
Then a system that increases in energy is like when money is printed.
When a system loses energy there is a guy named Rosenthal, Goldbaumer, or Silverstein working at the bank taking the money. How does that sound?

Energy is not a physical unit. It is a philosophical concept. Energy is defined as the capacity to do work. Work is defined as disordering of energy. So energy is defined as the capacity to do disordering of energy. That is called a circular definition, where you have to use the thing to define itself.
Trying to define economy is even worse because it is so closely connected to politics. In politics anything is true if you keep saying it, and nothing is true if you can't be forced to admit it.
