why is "-16c = 8 " equal to -1/2?
why isn't the answer -2?
-------------------------------------------------------
answers:
say: Divide each side by -16
Try substituting -2 and see what you get.
On the left hand side, what is -16 * -2? Is it 8?
Try then with -1/2
-
JG say: -16c = 8
c = 8/-16 = -1/2
-
Como say: (-16) c = 8
16 c =. - 8
c = - 8/16
c = -1/2
-
lenpol7 say: -16c = 8
Divide both sides by '-16'
Hence
-16c / -16 = 8 / -16
Cancel down the LHS
c = 8 / -16
Cancel down the RHS by '8'
c = 1 / -2
or
c = -1/2
-
David say: Because if c = -1/2 then -16 times -1/2 = 8
-
RR say: Some are taught to divide each side by -16.
-16c = 8
c = 8/-16
c = - 1/2
I was taught to cross multiply. It looks exactly the same and has the same answer!
-16c = 8
c = 8/-16
c = - 1/2

Jim Moor say: "What you do to one side of an equal sign, you must do to both sides"
-16c = 8
DIvide both sides by -16
(-16/-16) c = 8/-16
c = -1/2
===
BTW, 'c' is a 'bad' variable to use! Why? Because 'c' is used extensively for the 'speed of light'.

Puzzling say: To isolate c, you need to divide both sides by -16.
c = 8/-16
And that simplifies to:
c = 1/-2
c = -1/2
-
Krishnamurthy say: -16c = 8
-2c = 1
c = -1/2
-
Jeff Aaron say: Try it!
(-16)*(-2) = 8
32 = 8
FALSE
-
say: Divide each side by -16
Try substituting -2 and see what you get.
On the left hand side, what is -16 * -2? Is it 8?
Try then with -1/2
-
Idealist say: -16c=8
c=8/-16
c=-1/2
Answer: -1/2
-
Bill-M say: The fist step is to divide both sides of the equation by -16
-16c/-16 = 1
8/-16 = -0.5
