6g/cm^3. You determine the mass of your rock is 31.6g. You then place the rock into a graduated cylinder with 30 ml of water. You determine that the rock displaced 8.5ml of water.......
You find a piece of volcanic rock lying on the ground during your vacation to Hawaii. Being the budding geoscientist that you are, you determine the rock to be igneous. However, you can't determine if you've found a piece of dunite or a piece of basalt. You know that basalt has an average density of ~3 g/cm^3 while Danit's average density is ~3.6g/cm^3. You determine the mass of your rock is 31.6g. You then place the rock into a graduated cylinder with 30 ml of water. You determine that the rock displaced 8.5ml of water. (1 ml of water is equal to 1 cm^3).

A. What is the density of your sample in g/cm^3?

B. What type of rock did you find?

Thanks for the help, you all!

31.6g/8.5cm^3 = 3.7g/cm^3, so you likely have dunite.
