6 km/hr * 2.14 km/hr * 2.35 km - 15 km = 20 km, so it checks.......
The Clarke family went sailing on a lake. THeir boat averaged 6 kilometers per hour. The Rourke family took their outboard runabout for a trip on the lake for the same amount of time. Their boat averaged 14 kilometers per hour. THe Rurke Family traveled 20 kilometers farther than the Clarke family. How many hours did each family spend on their boat trip?

Please show your work, im hoping I finally figure this out.

Because the Rurkes went 20 km farther,
14 km/hr * x hrs = 6 km/hr * x hrs + 20km
Divide out the x hrs on both sides.
14 km/hr = 6 km/hr + 20 km
Subtract 6 km/hr from both sides.
8 km/hr = 20 km
Divide both sides by 8 km
hrs = 20/8 = 2.5
Now let's check it.
6 km/hr * 2.5 hr = 15 km
14 km/hr * 2.5 hr = 35 km
35 km - 15 km = 20 km, so it checks.j
