Can anyone explain schockley diode equation in words. eg. if voltage across diode increases what happens to current, or if temperature increases what happens to current.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode#p.E2.… The -1 is required to get the correct result for negative bias on the diode. In general the -1 can be ignored for forward bias voltages that are sufficient to get a few percent of rated current flowing.
