I know that it does happen, I'm just wondering why.

There is no purpose but it can be described.
"Hardening of the nipples mainly has to do with the numerous tiny stripes of muscles arranged within the skin beneath the areole (the brown circle surrounding the nipple bud). When aroused or cold, the muscle fibers contract. They cause changing of the size and shape of the area around the nipple, hardening and elevating of the center (the bud) and rising of goosebumps all over the breast.
The little bumps on the areole are elevated openings of the glands that surround the nipple. When muscles contract, they make an attempt to release the fluid each gland has produced, and so the areole appears bumpy.
The goosebumps on the skin of the breast (and everywhere else on the body) are caused by the tiny muscles arranged beside each and every hair. Their contraction elevates and straightens the hairs on our skin."

Jenny, I like the idea it's a sign a girl is aroused, and her nipples are in need of immediate mouth and tongue stimulation. I always assumed it was triggered by a rush of blood, similar to sexual arousal in the clitoris and penis..and a guy's nipples. Oh well, it's a beautiful thing regardless.
