If we evolved over millions of years, how did matter become a living organism, capable of evolution

There are valid theories for matter becoming life. The leading one involves atoms incorporating to form molecules such as lipids on the surface of clay and then these come into contact with water droplets to form "micelles" (primitive one membrane cells that aren't really alive), and then more bonds are formed to become proteins, proteins incorporate into enzymes, and enzymatic function gives life. The group in the paper I linked here actually succeeded in using a clay catalyst in a controlled environment resembling primordial Earth to create micelles and macromolecules. It's very possible. But here's the thing: a theory is a theory. Just because it works in the lab just means it's possible not certain or probable! The chemistry is definitely there, though, as proved by the Miller Urey experiment that successfully synthesized amino acids from raw elements in a controlled environment with electricity (lightening in primordial Earth) as an energy source. The chemistry is indisputable. So it's possible but we don't know everything and we're not in a race with creationists to find a definite answer, origin biologists just look for scenarios that led to the world we live in, they can't ever be 100% correct. Here's one thing you need to realize: very few biologists, including me, are out there to disprove a God. I am very very Catholic, I just like Biology.But as far as sand or rock becoming life, some people actually think that's what happened in a round-about way, I just don't necessarily agree that that's a perfect theory. But then again, I work with neurobiology so I don't have the complete authority to make that call. I hope this helps you see the other side at least!

There are some things in life you just have to accept. For instance the Big Bang. Where did it come from? If you're atheist the answer is: IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW. Otherwise it's God... But where did God come from... lol?
