a cell is taken from an environment that has a high salt concentration and is placed into an environment that does not contain any salt what effect will the change in environment have on the cell?
-
The cell lyses/swells when it is placed in to an environment that is hypotonic.
-
water will diffuse into the cell via osmosis resulting in the cell becoming turgid if it is a plant cell, and if it is an animal cell it will haemolyse - burst.
this is because it was placed in an environment with a low water potential, therefore the water within the cell diffused out by osmosis in order to raise the water potential of the surrounding environment - this causes the cell to become crenated (shrivelled) if it is a human cell and for the plant cell it becomes plasmoysed - the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall.
after this (assuming you have a human cell) the crenated cell is placed into an environment containing a high water potential, due to the water potential being lower within the cell, water diffuses in by osmosis to balance out the water potential gradient, causing the cell to expand and eventually haemolyse.

In the environment that has a high salt; since there is more particles outside of the cell, water will leave the cell resulting in a shriveled apperance. The cell is then said to be hypotonic. When the cell is moved into an environment with just pure water with no salt then there will be no net exchange of water to the cell resulting in no change. This is said to be isotonic.
