You can burn your retina.
When staring at the sun, your body reacts to the overall light it gets and more or less tells you "look somewhere else, you idiot, you'll burn us out" as a reflex.
But an eclipse is different: the edge of a covered sun are just as brightly burning as the whole uncovered one, but overall luminosity is much lower so your natural reflexes, that never had millions of years of continual eclipse to teach your evolution DNA to tell them apart just go "Oh, it is not that bright; have a look".
But in the end, it is still evolution in process: look at a solar eclipse with naked eyes, become blind. Chances you will find a mate and procreate will lessen.
If you want to look at it, get a proper light filter. Contact your local astronomy club, they will tell you where to get the proper stuff. If not, then join the very large % of the world population who will not see this first hand and watch TV coverage; they have the proper filters on their camera and telescopes.

That Niall guy doesnt know a damn thing haha. It will damage your eyes. I plan on just taking a few glances with my sunglasses on. Should be fine like that. The reason its dangerous ia because tge damaging rays still come from the sun just as strong. So even though you can stand to look at it without having to look away, your eyes are still being damaged by harmful rays.

the brightness of the Sun will damage your video camera on the phone. Remember, Galileo went blind from looking at the Sun.
Although a bit late, safe things to use are welder's glasses, Mylar or 5.0 neutral density filter (available from camera stores)
