Walking on the moon, Apollo question

because there is no atmosphere on the Moon. What passes for an atmosphere is so thin (individual atoms released when the charged particles from the solar wind strike the surface) that you can treat the atmosphere as a vacuum. However, If two astronauts are standing on a large rock (no dust), with the radios off and with the suit air circulation system off (which they would never do in real life), then the sound of one astronaut shouting could make it to the other astronaut by travelling through the rock.......
When you walk on the moon, is there enough air where you can hear other people talking? I was watching the last Apollo movie and was wondering if voices could be heard outside of the "suits" to where the 'moon crabs' could hear our voices? Interesting movie. Good fantasy, but interesting.

Sound cannot travel through an atmosphere on the Moon, because there is no atmosphere on the Moon. What passes for an "atmosphere" is so thin (individual atoms released when the charged particles from the solar wind strike the surface) that you can treat the "atmosphere" as a vacuum.

However, If two astronauts are standing on a large rock (no dust), with the radios off and with the suit air circulation system off (which they would never do in real life), then the sound of one astronaut shouting could make it to the other astronaut by travelling through the rock. But only faintly (the soles have too many layers to establish a suitable contact for the sound to transfer cleanly to (and from) the rock.

But they could stand close together and make contact -- faceplate to faceplate -- and the sound of your voice would cause your faceplace to vibrate, which would cause the other astronaut's faceplace to vibrate (by contact) which would cause sound vibration in the air of his suit... and he would hear you.

So, if YOU were making a movie, and if you wanted to make it slightly more believable, you would make the Moon creatures "hear" through their feet as they stand on rocks.

OK, not to be rude, but...

You do know that movie wasn't filmed on location on the actual moon, right?

Because sound waves require a medium to travel through. Air serves that purpose nicely, but there simply isn't any air on the moon. There is no ambient sound on the moon.

-
No. On the Moon there is a near total vacuum. Sound cannot travel at all.

And the 'last Apollo movie' was pure fiction.

-
No, there is not. Sound could not travel on the Moon.
