For example: 5min, 4min, 8min, 10min, 15min. What is the average minutes? I was told I need to multiple all of those numbers by 60 then add together= 2,520 Then divide by 5=504. To find the average, add them all up and divide by the number of samples:

5+4+8+10+15 = 42

There are 5 samples:
42/5 = 8.4 minutes

0.4 minutes is not 40 seconds. To convert 0.4 minutes into seconds you multiply by 60

0.4 x 60 =24 seconds.

The average is 8 minutes 24 seconds

david say: Multiplying by 60 and later dividing by 60 is a waste of time. They cancel each other, that is why just adding and dividing by 5 gives the same answer.
.... BUT, .4 min is not 40 sec .. it is 24 sec
so you can report the answer as 8.4 minutes, or as 8 min 24 sec.

llaffer say: You would only have to convert time labels if any were different than the others. You would want to get the average overall times with the same label. Since they already are in minutes, no need to convert them into seconds in order to get the average.
