Was 1999 and 2000 in the same decade?

busterwasmycat say: not in my book, but you could look at it that way if you choose. there are nine "decades" that include both years that are possible. I, like most people, choose to divide my decades by the value of the tens digit (9 for the 90s).

A decade is simply a period of 10 consecutive years. 2000 is not in the 90s, though, because the 90s declares that all values are ninety-something.

Starrysky say: All the others are wrong. Since there was no year Zero or 0, the first year was 1. The end of the first century was the end of year 100, and the first day of next century was Jan 1, 101.
Go 1900 years farther on, and you have Dec. 31 2000 as last day of the 1990s decade, the last day of the 2nd Millennium' The next day Jan 1, 2001, was the first day for the 2000s and first day of the 3rd Millennium.
Count it out on your fingers for the 2000 years. Should take less than an hour.
