one of my books says 36, and one says 38. can someone clarify for me please?

There are 34 made in the electron transport chain, 2 made in glycolysis, so you do get 36 ATP. However you also get 2 molecules of GTP (Guanine tri-phosphate) from the Krebs cycle through substrate level phosphorylation. Your book may have been accounting for those two molecules which are produced, since they can be used for energy just as ATP can, the only major difference is the nucleotide which is part of the molecule.

36- You have 8 NADH and 2 FADH made in the Krebs cycle in two turns (two turns per pyruvate), 2 NADH made in glycolysis, so that's 10 NADH and 2 FADH
1 NADH = 3 ATP, so that's 10x3=30 ATP made during the electron transport chain
1 FADH = 2 ATP, so that's 2x2=4 ATP made during the electron transport chain
So that's 34 ATP, plus 2 made in glycolysis = 36
1 NADH = 3 ATP, so that's 10x3=30 ATP made during the electron transport chain
1 FADH = 2 ATP, so that's 2x2=4 ATP made during the electron transport chain
So that's 34 ATP, plus 2 made in glycolysis = 36
